Taxi
Newark Airport has taxi stands at every terminal and posted signs show you the way. Depending on your destination, a taxi from Newark to Manhattan can cost between $50-$75, not including tolls and possible surcharges for oversized luggage. The local taxi commission will also add a surcharge of $5.50 for credit card payments.

AirTrain and New Jersey Transit

The train from Newark Airport to Manhattan begins with the AirTrain, which is available from each of the three terminals. From your terminal, follow the signs to the AirTrain,stopping at the NJ Transit ticket machines at the AirTrain entrance to purchase tickets. The ticket you buy is for your complete journey on both the AirTrain and the NJ Transit train. Tip! Save time and download the NJ Transit app to buy your tickets on the go. Purchase a ticket to New York Penn Station, NOT Newark Penn Station. Tickets are $15.25. Head up to the AirTrain platform and take the train going to the Newark Liberty International Airport Train station. The ride takes less than 10 minutes. At the Airport Station, get off the AirTrain and connect with the NJ Transit train going to New York Penn Station. Look for signs and screens directing you to the correct platform. The ride to New York Penn will be about 30 minutes. Be sure you get on a NJ Transit Train, not an Amtrak Train. The conductor will check tickets once you’re on board. The train will likely make a couple of stops but don’t get off the train until you reach New York Penn Station. Once you arrive in New York City, access the NYC subway system or get to a taxi line for a cab to your destination.

Newark Airport Express Bus
This Express Bus runs daily, approximately every 30 minutes, from Newark Airport to Manhattan and back. There are three drop off locations in Manhattan. They are: The Port Authority Bus Terminal, Bryant Park, and Grand Central Terminal. One-way tickets are $17 and round-trip tickets are $30.

Subway

Since you will be in NYC for just a couple of days, use the new OMNY Tap and Go System for purchasing subway fare. At each turnstile you will see a screen that says OMNY.Scan your smartphone, smart watch or any credit card with contactless technology embedded in it to instantly purchase a single ride. Once the screen reads “GO” proceed through the turnstile and onto the platform. Purchases are valid on all transfers within a two- hour window.Cost is $2.75 per ride.

Travel Essentials: I recommend packing a small day bag (messenger style or backpack) foryour days exploring the city. Include a refillable water bottle (tap water in NYC is very good) hand sanitizer, travel pack of sanitizing wipes, a mask, a cell phone battery charger, small amount of cash and credit/debit card.

As of April 2021 NYC is welcoming domestic visitors with no requirement to produce a negativecovid test or quarantine upon arrival. That said, New York City has been hit hard by the pandemic and is in a cautious, phased reopening. For current status and updates visit:

As of April 2nd, venues for events, arts and entertainment were allowed to reopen at 33% capacity,capped at 100 people indoors and 200 people outdoors. If there's attendee testing, capacity increases to 150 people indoors and 500 people outdoors -- with distancing and face covering requirements.
Indoor dining expanded to 50% capacity on March 19th. Outdoor dining continues, with restaurants and bars building ad hoc structures. Bars and restaurants must close at 11 p.m.

Museums are open, but have started mandating timed reservations, in a bid to comply with lower capacity rules. MoMA, the Museum of Natural History and the Whitney are all operating a policy of prebought tickets only. Visitors should expect temperature checks on arrival. Websites are updated regularly to reflect current status, so be sure to check prior to arriving.
Nonessential retail is open.
Masks are mandatory in public, however, and social distancing guidelines must be adhered to at all times.
